Don't take it
to the tip.
Old plates, mugs, glasses, the dinner set that's lived in the back of the cupboard for years. Bring it here and somebody gets to break it.
What we can take
A smash session is a crate of 20–25 things to break, and most of what goes in the crates was donated by somebody in Geelong who was about to throw it out anyway.
Yes, bring it
- Plates, bowls, dinner sets. Chipped and mismatched is fine
- Mugs, cups, saucers, teapots
- Drinking glasses, wine glasses, tumblers
- Vases, ornaments, ceramic pots
- Picture frames, as long as the glass is still in them
- Bottles and jars, rinsed out
Ring us first
- TVs, monitors, printers, keyboards, stereos
- Anything with a cord or a battery
Working or broken makes no difference to us. The reason we ask is disposal. Electronics can't legally go in a general waste bin in Victoria, so they take a separate trip and we can only hold so many at once. Call and we'll tell you straight away.
What we can't take
- Anything with food still on it
- Light globes, fluoro tubes, anything with mercury in it
- Paint tins, aerosols, chemicals
- Furniture, timber, mattresses, whitegoods
- Anything already broken, because someone has to sort sharp edges by hand
Dropping it off
Come when we're open
Thu 2:30–8, Fri 12–10, Sat 10–10, Sun 10–7. We're shut Monday to Wednesday and there's nowhere safe to leave a box, so please don't put anything at the door.
Park out the front
12 Raptor Place, South Geelong. Bring it into reception and someone will sort you out.
Boxes beat bags
A box or a crate is easier for everyone than a bag that splits on the way in. If you can carry it, we can take it.
Before you load the car
Some people turn up with a tip run. A shed clear-out, a garage full of furniture, half a bathroom. We're not the answer for that, and we'd rather say so now than when you're standing in reception. We take breakables, in quantities a person can carry. Anything beyond that is a job for the transfer station.
And we can't do pickups. There's one ute and it's usually busy.
Good to know
Does it need to be clean?
Rinsed is plenty. Nothing with food still on it, though. The crates sit in storage for a while before they get used.
What if it's chipped or cracked already?
Doesn't matter in the slightest. It's going in a crate to be hit with a bat. Chipped, mismatched, faded, ugly. All fine. Just not already smashed, because then it's sharp and someone has to sort it by hand.
Can I bring a TV?
Ring us on 0416 162 226 first. It's less a safety thing than a disposal one. E-waste can't go in a general bin in Victoria, so we handle electronics separately and can only take a certain number at a time.
Can you pick it up from me?
No, sorry. Drop-off only, during opening hours.
Can I smash my own stuff?
Yes, and people do. Old wedding china is a popular one. Book a session and bring it with you. Same rules as above about what we can and can't take.
Or stay and break it yourself.
Geelong's only smash room. Crate of breakables, weapon of choice, your playlist. $50pp, ages 12+.
